Who Should Take This Certification?
Anyone who offers support during or in the wake of adversity (such as emergencies, disasters, loss, illness, uncertainty) from within a pastoral, spiritual, or religious context will find this certification applicable. Pastors, chaplains, pastoral counselors, lay clergy, and or other non-ordained individuals who provide crisis intervention will likely find this certification of value.
Requirements for the Certification in PCI
Certification in PCI can only be obtained by first completing the ICISF two-day class in Pastoral Crisis Intervention. It is suggested that this course will have been completed within the last five years to ensure greatest relevance, however, that time frame is not mandatory.
Second, in order to receive a Certification in PCI, one must pass the Certification of Pastoral Crisis Intervention (CPCI) Examination, sponsored and endorsed by the Charleston Southern University – Dewey Center for Chaplaincy.
The exam is open book, true-false and multiple choice examination based upon course materials and class discussions. All necessary resources will be supplied as part of the PCI class.
Resource Materials: 1) PCI class notes. 2) The book Pastoral Crisis Intervention. 3) PCI supplemental materials. In addition the book Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM): A Practical Review textbook, which can be found in the ICISF CISM Bookstore, will be useful but is not required to take and pass the PCI Exam.
Successful completion and passing the PCI exam is confirmation of an individual’s basic understanding of PCI.
This certification is a confirmation of knowledge, not practical nor applied ability. It is not a certification of clinical or applied competency.
Designating the Certification
Upon successful completion of the PCI Certification Exam, a certificant may indicate this achievement on a CV or resume. The certificant can also use the initials CPCI after his or her name to indicate certification.
Certification is good for five years. A recertification exam based on current topics and resources is required to continue your Certification. In this manner, individuals are encouraged to stay current with the field.
